Coupling Planet Simulator Mars, a general circulation model of the Martian atmosphere, to the ice sheet model SICOPOLIS

چکیده
A general circulation model of the Martian Atmosphere is coupled with a 3-dimensional polythermal ice-sheet model of the polar ice caps. With this combination a series of experiments is carried out to investigate the impact of long-term obliquity change on the Martian north polar ice cap (NPC). The behaviour of the NPC is tested under obliquities of y 1⁄4 15 , 25 and 35 . With increasing obliquity the area covered by the NPC gets smaller but does not vanish. However, when started from an ice-free condition the models develop an ice cap only for low obliquities. The ‘critical’ obliquity at which a build-up of a new polar cap is possible is y 1⁄4 22 . r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A reanalysis of water abundances in the Martian atmosphere at high obliquity
[1] We take a new look at expected atmospheric water vapor abundances on Mars during periods of high obliquity using the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory Mars General Circulation Model. For the first time, the sublimation and burial of the present-day residual polar caps beneath a sublimation lag is considered as the planet shifts from lower to high (45 ) obliquity periods. Following the e...

[1] The Reanalysis derived from the UK Mars general circulation model assimilation of Thermal Emission Spectrometer temperature and dust opacity retrievals at present provides the best estimate of the evolving state of the Martian atmosphere over the course of the Mars Global Surveyor mapping mission. A Control simulation has also been carried out using the same evolving dust distribution as th...
متن کاملWater ice clouds in a martian global climate model using data assimilation
The water cycle is one of the key seasonal cycles on Mars, and the radiative effects of water ice clouds have recently been shown to alter the thermal structure of the atmosphere. Current Mars General Circulation Models (MGCMs) are capable of representing the formation and evolution of water ice clouds, though there are still many unanswered questions regarding their effect on the water cycle, ...
متن کاملOn the orbital forcing of Martian water and CO2 cycles: A general circulation model study with simplified volatile schemes
[1] Variations in the Martian water and CO2 cycles with changes in orbital and rotational parameters are examined using the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory Mars General Circulation Model. The model allows for arbitrary specification of obliquity, eccentricity, and argument of perihelion as well as the position and thickness of surface ice. Exchange of CO2 between the surface and atmospher...
متن کاملIce Sheet Modelling and Applications to Greenland, Antarctica and the Martian Polar Ice Caps
Ice sheets, ice shelves, ice caps and glaciers are active, dynamic components of the climate system of the Earth, and they deserve the same scientific attention as the atmosphere and the oceans. Since the late 1970s, numerical modelling has become established as an important technique for the understanding of ice dynamics. Ice sheet models are particularly relevant for predicting their possible...
